Rare Signed PAUL SORMANI French Louis XVI Parquetry Inlaid Games Table, circa 1870.We feature a growing selection of Oriental, Chinese and Ethnic antiques. FREE PICK-UP IN THE CHICAGOLAND AREA. Up for your consideration is an original Paul Sormani (France) games table in the Louis XVI style, having a circular top inlaid to show figures and a hot air balloon in an architectural landscape, above a parquetry inlaid frieze with two opposing drawers and writing slides, raised on square tapering legs, one drawer bearing a brass plaque engraved Paul Sormani 10r Charlot, Paris.
The top is reversable (to reveal the parquetry image, or the checkerboad on the other side). The top can further be removed to reveal a leather top table. The table measures 30 1/8 tall x diameter 31 3/4 inches. There is no finer French maker from this period, and Sormani's furniture is considered works of great art. The table is signed with the Sormani plaque that was used between 1867 - 1877, which is during his lifetime.
The condition of the table is excellent. There is light wear throughout, but no chips, cracks, or significant scratches. All drawers and slides work perfectly. It appears as if the piece has caster (wheeled) brass legs, which have been removed and lost.Born in Venice, Paul Sormani set up in Paris by the middle of 19th century. He specialized in creating furniture and works of art mainly in Louis XV and Louis XVI styles. He exhibited at many Expositions Universelles, among which Paris in 1855 where he was awarded a first class medal, London in 1862 where he received another medal and in Paris in 1867. Everyone agreed that his creations revealed the highest standards of quality ; during the 1867 Universal Exhibition the catalogue described his work as follows : "toute sa production révèle une qualité d'exécution de tout premier ordre". In 1867, he moved to 10, rue Charlot, where he met a great success until his death in 1877.
His wife and son took over the business and later moved it to 134, Boulevard Haussmann. From this date onwards pieces are normally signed "Veuve Sormani & Fils". The Sormani mark is either stamped on the wood or engraved on the lockplate, incorporating the address.
