The two great French makers of pianos who were also at the cutting edge of piano development during the nineteenth century were Ignace Pleyel and Sebastien Erard, the latter being responsible for the invention of the double escapement mechanism that became part of the modern form of piano action. It is also uncommon to see older French pianos in Australia as the market was dominated initially by the English and then later in the nineteenth century by the German manufacturers. However, the Australian retail music firm of R.
J Paling was an importer of French pianos and was given an award at the 1879 Sydney International Exhibition for importing pianos from France. This instrument is also significant as it not only features a circular metallic plaque inside acknowledging Erard's prize medal at the 1867 Paris International Exhibition but also includes a second circular metallic plaque written in French stating the instrument was manufactured for R. J Paling, Melbourne and bearing the serial number 55590 dating the instrument to 1876 (year stamped as 1876 at the back of the each pedals). This confirms the piano was made quite early in Paling's history which was established in the 1850s and became one of the longest running music retailers in Australia until their closure in the 1970s.
